Polaroids Manipulated, 11x9 cm, 2017

These three photographs are part of a series of 95 Polaroids, 11 x 9 cm each,  I captured in 2017, reflecting my personal journey as a young woman navigating the constraints of societal and familial expectations. The triptych explores women's perception by capturing how women observe and internalise their surroundings—revealing the contrast between what is seen and what is perceived in relation to their bodies. It highlights the struggle of expressing these experiences, reflecting the profound difficulty of many faces in speaking out.

In the context of gender-based violence (GBV), the throat chakra represents a battleground where women’s voices are stifled, leaving them unheard, isolated, and often silenced by fear and societal stigma. The blocked or unbalanced throat chakra can embody the frustration, anger, and helplessness that many women feel as they struggle to express their experiences of violence and injustice. This image confronts the suppression of voice that many women endure, especially those from marginalised backgrounds, who are often disproportionately affected by GBV. It illustrates the emotional toll of being unheard, highlighting the need for societal change to create safe spaces for women to express their truth without fear of retribution.
